Synthetic dyes impact not only aquatic environments but all ecosystems. The fashion industry emits between 8% - 10 % of greenhouse gas emissions and uses 700 thousand tons of colorant annually, which is responsible for 20% of the world’s water pollution.

Chemical and azo dyes have an extraordinary environmental and human impact. Approximately 200 tons of water are used for every ton of textile, and 25% of chemical compounds produced worldwide are used in textiles. Untreated wastewater expelled carries dye contamination, diluents, suspended solids, dissolved mineral salts (chloride and sodium sulfate, calcium carbonate), organic and coloring matters, and dissolved gases. *
